Mazu temple in Magang village of the Matsu islands, Taiwan.
Mazu is the Chinese goddess of the sea, often worshiped around coastal areas, particularly in Taiwan. Local legend says Mazu's body washed up here on the shores of Nangan island after she sacrificed her life to save her own father at sea. The temple above was dedicated to her as a result and a yearly festival centered around the temple honors Matsu's namesake.
