A neatly piled stack of rambutan fruits at a local market in Bangkok.

Nothing beats the mangosteen (purple fruits in the lower left corner of the image) for flavor and tastiness in the world of fruits. However, the delightfully hairy rambutan comes in at third, just after mangoes in my list of most delicious and flavorful fruits in the world! If you dare claim the papaya as number one, I'll have no choice but to deliver a flying karate chop to your kidneys. That threat is mainly aimed at my girlfriend, Lady Travelguy, who has deluded herself into thinking that a lowly papaya can come even remotely close to the cavalcade of flavors in a mangosteen.

A closeup of a hairy red rambutan.

Despite its categorization as a fruit, its shape and form is rather vulgar, nearly proving that the gods must have a lewd sense of humor. And that's before you open it to see the perfect egg-shaped edible portion on the inside!
