A Kashmiri gypsy tends to her grazing herd.
It surprised me to discover that gypsies (aka Roma), better known for their European presence, also eke out a living in the mountains of Kashmir. Upon further investigation, the revelation makes full sense. In July of 2009, the BBC news reported:
Historians agree that the Roma's origins lie in north-west India and that their journey towards Europe started between the 3rd and 7th Centuries...The article offers an interesting read on the origins of the same gypsies living in present day Europe (see full article http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8136812.stm).
Note: Several months ago, I realized I had an unpublished stash of Kashmir photos obscured due to a mistaken Lightroom filter. As of today, I have released what I wanted to release. Starting next weekend, archived photos (on the weekends) will feature photos focusing on non-Kashmir locales. I also have a modest stash of previously unreleased north India (primarily Himachal Pradesh) photos that I'll slowly publish along with the regular slew of weekend archived photos.
